A few years ago, I attended a conference for coaches in Washington DC. It was a good conference, but I noticed something about myself: no matter how interesting the topic, my mind wandered during the presentations. I also noticed that the moment the speaker began telling a story, my mind was back on track and focused!
Stories grab and hold our attention in a different way than other information does – even if the information is really interesting!
Ever since that conference, I’ve had the desire to experience a conference built around stories! I pitched the idea to several conference ‘designers’ but couldn’t get anyone to bite.
Part of me wondered if my idea was bad and that’s why no one was interested. But another part of me knew my idea was solid. Every person I shared the idea with who would attend a conference, was positive about it.
This past October I was at another coaching conference, this time in Prague, Czech Republic. I noticed the exact same thing happening with my attention span. One keynote speaker (who was excellent) told his story in “90 seconds” and then proceeded to share information for the next 45 minutes. The information was great, but I wished he’d reversed the material. Why not tell his story for 45 minutes and share the information in “90 seconds”?
It just so happened, my colleague, Russ, was attending the same conference. During one of the breaks, I brought up my desire to hear more stories.
Russ agree, and within minutes, we were saying, “Let’s do this!”
The original story conference/retreat was scheduled for August 2020, in northern Italy. A more beautiful setting would be difficult to come by.
As you all know, our story conference/retreat won’t be happening in Italy this August.
But, Russ and I believe our conference is worth converting to a virtual experience. So, we’ve done that and are now planning The Story Conference for July 10, 11, 17, & 18. Those are two Fridays and two Saturdays. Friday evening sessions are 2 hours and Saturday sessions are 3 hours.
The Story Conference will be an experiential conference. Stories will be told, shared, explored, and retold. We expect some laughs, and some tears. We’ll learn about the vulnerability of storytelling, the reasons why stories keep our attention even when we’re heard them over and over, and we’ll explore how to tell stories in an impactful way.
We’d be honored to have you join us. No storytelling experience is necessary to attend the conference. You will not be required to tell a story during the conference, but you’ll have the opportunity if you’d like to.
The Story Conference registration fee is $350. If you are interested in attending but cannot make the financial commitment, we’ve got a few scholarships available.
